Consultants’ Qualifications

Kate Busch Gervais, President

Kate has worked with nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years. For more than six years, she was senior program and development officer for the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut. In 2011 Kate produced and managed the 57
th annual Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI) an international creativity conference. Kate was formerly executive director of the Alliance of Resident Theatres in New York City, and has been director of new philanthropic services at the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy, where she managed the launch of Leave a Legacy Connecticut and the Connecticut Giving Project, which were awarded state and national awards for excellence and innovation.

Kate has expertise in general management, marketing, development, strategic planning and a special expertise in facilities issues for nonprofit organizations. She has designed facilities research and services for the Cultural Facilities Fund of New York City and the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Project. She has served on the Architecture Panel of the New York State Council on the Arts, and advised Grantmakers in the Arts (NYC), the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) and other groups. She has lectured and presented locally and nationally on a variety of management topics. She has been interviewed by CBS-TV, National Public Radio, The New York Times, The Hartford CourantNew York Magazine, PlaybillCrain’s New York Business and others.

Kate is a popular presenter who has developed sessions and presented at conferences for the National Committee on Planned Giving, the Council on Foundations and Grantmakers in Health, among others.

 Tom Gervais, Senior Consultant 

Tom has consulted for more than 15 years with corporations, nonprofits and government. He has been a Senior Consultant with Strategic Management Consulting for six years, working with nonprofit organizations on strategic planning, research, results management and process improvement. For five years he was an internal consultant with the Hartford Technology Services Corporation at The Hartford Financial Services Group. He is currently a data architect with The Hartford and has been awarded his Green Belt in Six Sigma Process Improvement. His work has been recognized by a Chairman's Award and a U.S. Patent. While at The Hartford, Tom has actively participated in mentoring programs to support Hartford youth in their education, an activity that has enhanced his life immeasurably.

As an internal consultant for the State of Connecticut, Tom worked with various agencies as both a project manager and a programmer.  He created a business plan for the Comptroller and Information Technology to improve service delivery for the Department of Insurance and the Liquor Control Commission. 

While with Maximus, a consulting company that specializes in work for government, Tom created a strategic plan for the collaborative sharing of information among criminal justice agencies for the states of Connecticut and Ohio.

Tom is an avid reader and musician who strives for excellence in his art and work. Tom graduated from the University of Connecticut with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Economics.
