Experience
Kate Busch Gervais, the firm’s principal, has worked with nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years. Currently she is senior program and development officer for the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut. Kate was formerly executive director of the Alliance of Resident Theatres in New York City, and has been director of new philanthropic services at the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy and consultant to Long Wharf Theater, Hill-Stead Museum and the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, among others. Strategic planning clients have included Family Services, Inc. (Poughkeepsie, NY), Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford, Covenant to Care for Children and the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. She ran an executive search for CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program) and worked with the Capitol Region Partnership to present an event, Census 2000: Trends Shaping Education, Business, Government & Civic Life.

Kate has expertise in general management, marketing, development, strategic planning and a special expertise in facilities issues for nonprofit organizations. She has designed facilities research and services for the Cultural Facilities Fund of New York City and the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Project. She has served on the Architecture Panel of the New York State Council on the Arts, and advised Grantmakers in the Arts (NYC), the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) and other groups. She has lectured and presented locally and nationally on a variety of management topics.

Most recently, Kate has served as a presenter for Grantmakers in Health and the Council on Foundations' annual national conferences.

DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR – (HALF-TIME) Implement the organization’s fund development program, including annual fund, major gifts, membership, capital, program, government relations.

1998-2000 CONNECTICUT COUNCIL FOR PHILANTHROPY – Hartford, CT
DIRECTOR OF NEW PHILANTHROPIC SERVICES – Recruited to provide strategic and operational focus to Connecticut Giving Project, an effort to permanently increase philanthropic giving statewide. Worked with national leaders in philanthropy and provided services to foundations statewide. Adapted the fundamentals of “Leave A Legacy”, a national program to encourage people to leave bequests to nonprofit organizations in their wills. Effort received substantial publicity with 500 participating organizations and 120 committed professional volunteers. Project received statewide and national awards

1997-1998 SCIENCE CENTER OF CONNECTICUT – West Hartford, CT
CAMPAIGN DIRECTOR – Provided leadership and focus to the campaign to build a new science center on the banks of the Connecticut River. Worked with program staff to develop innovative giving opportunities for major donors.

Served as Chief Executive Officer of this nonprofit agency that provides leadership and support services to hundreds of professional New York City theaters with annual budgets ranging from $10,000 to $20 million. Areas of accountability included: strategic planning; needs assessment; program development and evaluation; public and community affairs; advocacy; board development; human resources; marketing and public relations (organizational and industry-wide); and fundraising.
